January 19th-Gore and 20th Riverton

Wednesday January 18th.
Today the kids and Dad headed back to Gore.  We had so much fun yesterday at the multisport complex we decided to go swimming.  There is a nice size pool meant more for the younger kids and a giant pool meant for older kids and adults.  It is a frantic but fun place.  The boys got into a fun game with some local kids involving huge intertubes and floaties while Tara grew fins and decided to swim laps for forty-five minutes!
I couldn’t believe it!  I kept asking her to come play but she said she was having fun!
  p.s. I forgot the camera today:O
Friday January 20th. Riverton
Today Dad and the kids headed south and west to the great town of Riverton.  The entire town stretches along the ocean and there are a lot of places to take walks and play at the beach.  It is known as the paua shell capital of the world.  You are greeted by an enormous shell as you enter the town (the entire structure is coated with real paua shells.
Our first stop was the paua shell factory.  We learned a lot about this edible abalone.  It eats seaweed and algae and is capable of moving.  The locals catch and eat the black looking mollusk (it is apparently white on the inside).  The cook it with garlic and butter.
Next we headed down town and beyond to visit several beaches.  We also found several parks.  The first had a boat and the benches were all nautically themed.  The second had a giant whale and two really large slides.  Along our long walks the kids found many treasures including cool shells and a large crab claw.
There was a lot more to do and see there but we headed back to Winton to get ready for our trip.  We picked Mom up from work and headed down the road to Dunedin.  This time we are staying at the Chapel Apartments.  It was a church but was converted into apartments.  It is one of the coolest places we have stayed!
