Dunedin

January 5th Thursday
Today we headed out in our mini-bus to Dunedin.  We feel right at home as there are lots of farms and it is not nearly as mountainous.  It is fun to see all the sheep.  Dunedin is the second largest city in the South Island and very heavily influenced by its Scottish heritage.  The name comes from Dùn Èideann, the Scottish-Gaelic name for Edinburgh.  We heard bag pipes playing outside the Scottish shop.
Mom went to her required medical interview while the rest of us looked for a new coat for Dad who left his in Sydney airport.  After the interview, we met up with mom and explored Dunedin.  It is a beautiful city centered around what they call the Octagon.  As you might guess, it is an octagon shaped space with various businesses and green space around it.  We explored the oldest church in this region (the region is called Otago).
After eating dinner we headed back to the hotel for a low key night.  This area is very hilly and beautiful.
We found a cool place to stop on our way to Dunedin.

The 12 seater mini-bus.

Dunedin is hilly.

The octagon area.

Cool building along the Dunedin octagon.

The first church in this area (Otago).

Cool celtic cross.

  1. Dear James, Ursula, Brody, Gabe, and Tara-

We LOVE every picture and every post, LOVE this chance to journey with you! We always look forward to the next post.

Today is Janni January Christmas, and it's not the same without you. At dinnertime, Joshua tapped me on the shoulder and signed, "Where are all the kids?" Of course, he meant Brody, Gabe, and Tara. He ended up pulling Aunt Jill aside to build a Thomas train track. : ) Everyone misses you, and we can't wait for summer cousin fun when you are back in the states.

In the spirit of missing you, we are going to pay you a cyber visit. All of our posts are sent with love and prayers and lots of hugs!

    Love,
    Becky

  2. Hi,
This is Anna here. Today we are celebrating the Janni Christmas. We miss that you are not here with us. Joshua even asked where you were in sign language. I also have remembered you as we ate Tiramusa that Grandma and Grandpa got at Biaggi's. I hear Grandma saying ''I didn't make as much caramel corn because James is not here.'' I hope you have been having a great time in New Zealand. Happy New Year!
    Love Anna
P.S. Tell Tara hi for me.

We are all having a Great day. We are celebrated the Janni Christmas today. We even had snow on the ground this morning. It is one of the first snows we have had. We chose a great day to have it! We hope all is going well for you now that you are in Winton. Hope work is going well. We miss reading comments on the blog. We did have the Taramasu for dessert at lunch. We got that at Your Big 40th birthday.
We pray that you are all safe and enjoying your new home for seven months.

  7. Merry Janni Christmas Livermores,

Do any of you know how to play Chinese checkers? Given the time it took for the boys to play today, it is clear we don't know what we are doing.

We have all enjoyed following your adventures through this blog. The kids were particularly impressed with the Sydney Opera House. I liked the Cathedral Cove and the hot sand beach. Too cool! I have also enjoyed telling people at work and church that my sister's family is currently in New Zealand.

    God Bless!
    Love you all!

    James
